Melanie Oudin’s fairytale is over

No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki, a 19-year-old from Denmark, ousted Oudin, 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday in a match between first-time Grand Slam quarterfinalists.

Wozniacki, who won the Pilot Pen in New Haven Aug. 29, has won a tour-best 61 matches this season, having dropped just one of the last 21 sets she’s played. She is the first Dane, male or female, in the Open Era to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam. Her opponent will be another 19-year-old, Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

Q. Five weeks ago you were playing against a kid from Boston College. Now you just beat a former US Open winner on center court. How do you make the transition?
MELANIE OUDIN: It’s not that hard for me ’cause I love playing tennis no matter who I’m playing. Getting to play Maria today was an unbelievable experience for me. She’s such a great competitor, a great player. I just had a blast playing there today.

Melanie Oudin’s Cinderella story continues at the 2009 US Open. The 17-year-old Georgia native’s incredible run is still going strong, as Oudin advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3 come-from-behind win over No. 13 seed Nadia Petrova.

On her third match point, Oudin hit a screaming forehand crosscourt winner that landed out of Petrova’s reach. The second the ball hit the open court, she raised her arms and dropped her racket, with the entire crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium on its feet and erupting in celebration. But the cheers were not only limited to the main show court.
